This movie must be Shane, a Paramount movie from the early fifties. Alan Ladd played Shane, Jean Arthur, in her last screen appearance, played the farmers wife. Her husband was Van Heflin and their some was portrayed by a very young Brandon DeWilde. The villain was played by jack Palance. The movie was available on both video and dvd and is considered a classic.
